The Big Catch-up with Lauren Hiller - Commercial Officer at Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)!

This is the first in a series of chats with the people who, in one way or another, help to make Kingfisher special.

Our first chat is with Loren Hiller, Commercial Officer at the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).  The MSC sets the standards for sustainable fishing. Its blue fish label can be found on fish products and menus, such as Kingfisher's, around the world.


 








1. Tell us a bit about the MSC

The MSC is an international non-profit organisation, recognising and rewarding efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future. For 20 years now, the MSC has been part of a team effort to keep oceans healthy and full of life, wanting future generations to enjoy seafood forever. We encourage consumers to choose the blue fish label when eating seafood, which ensures the fish you eat can be traced back to a sustainable source.

2. How did you come to work with Kingfisher?

I joined the MSC 6 months ago, focusing much of my time working with our current MSC certified fish and chip shops and supporting those businesses who are beginning to start their journey towards MSC certification. I began working with Kingfisher early on in my role; they were the UK's 2017 number one fish and chip shop and it was clear from the offset that Craig and Nikki were both passionate sustainable seafood advocates, or 'Wild Ones' as we call them at the MSC. Craig is also the vice president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, who the MSC are in regular contact with. We meet throughout the year to discuss how we can better improve sustainability standards in the fish and chip industry. I am really lucky to work with such an amazing business who do so much for the industry.

3. Why should fish and chip customers always look for the blue fish label?

There's no doubt that fish and chips, the quintessentially British takeaway, holds a special place in people's hearts. However, we need to make sure that we protect the oceans and do not overfish or harm other marine life in the process. If there are no fish, then there are no fish and chips. By choosing seafood with the MSC blue fish label on the menu at Kingfisher (and when you do your supermarket shop), you can be certain that your wild seafood has been fished sustainably and can be traced back to its source. You can be a 'Wild One' by supporting the future of our oceans and the future of our nation's favourite takeaway.  






4. What are the main issues fish and chip customers should be aware of?

Did you know that more than two thirds of the earth's surface is covered by oceans? They are vitally important for life on this planet and support the livelihoods of 1/10 of the world's population. The oceans regulate climate, provide a source of income and provide a source of food that we humans consume every day. However, when too many fish are caught and there are not enough adults to breed and sustain a healthy population, the stock is overfished. Marine ecosystems are under a continuous amount of pressure as unsustainable fishing is threatening fish populations, ocean habitats and coastal fishing communities. By choosing seafood with the blue MSC label you are supporting independently certified sustainable fisheries. Their good management practices help ensure fish stocks and habitats are healthy and fishing community livelihoods are secure.

5. Complete the following sentence - 'The best fish and chips should always...'

The best fish and chips should always be suitably salty, eye-wateringly vinegary and served in paper (Plus MSC certified).

6. If you weren't working with the MSC, what job would you be doing?

If it wasn't for the fact I am extremely passionate about our planet and saving the ocean, my dream job would be to be a performer, maybe in a play or even a musical on the West End (that might be difficult as singing is certainly not my forte). I also come from quite a sporty family, my mum is a PE teacher and my sister is a physio, so maybe I'd be a personal trainer or, in an ideal world, a professional athlete.

7. What are your favourite things to do in Devon?

I've been fortunate enough to go on holiday to Devon many times with my family. It's up there as one of my favourite places to visit in the UK as it's just so beautiful. I love to visit all the charming villages and picturesque towns, as well as walks along the coastline. You just don't get that in London. For me though, it's all about setting up for the day on one of the wonderful beaches with my family, having some chips out of a paper bag, a 99 ice cream with a flake and then ending up in a local pub for a nice cosy dinner.
